Abstract:

This thesis examines the transformative role of art institutions as spaces for social inclusion and therapeutic art, exploring their potential to enhance both individual and community well-being. The study is organized into two main chapters: the first chapter delves into new perspectives introduced by critical and social museology, highlighting the shift in museum roles from solely preserving cultural heritage to actively fostering social change and cultural sustainability. Key concepts such as innovation in museology, community engagement, and the economic sustainability of cultural heritage are discussed, with an emphasis on participatory and collaborative practices within museums. This chapter also explores the vital role of museum professionals in education and public engagement, showing how educational activities can be powerful tools for social inclusion. Special focus is given to educational and production workshops, regarded as innovative means of preserving intangible cultural heritage. These spaces not only facilitate the transmission of traditional knowledge and skills but also promote active community participation, fostering dialogue across generations and cultures. The second chapter addresses inclusive arts and art therapy, highlighting the therapeutic potential of museums. Through case studies, it examines how art is used to address social challenges, promote psychological well-being, and foster the inclusion of marginalized groups. The concept of “Art Hives” is introduced as an innovative model for art workshops, where artists and therapists collaborate with participants to create inclusive, non-judgmental spaces that encourage creative expression and a sense of belonging. The thesis underscores how museums, through art therapy programs, can offer safe spaces for personal growth and the formation of new social identities. It also emphasizes the importance of incorporating these programs into cultural policies to make museums more inclusive, accessible, and responsive to the needs of contemporary communities. Finally, the study reflects on the role of art and culture as catalysts for social change, advocating for a more participatory and inclusive approach in museum practices. In today’s interconnected world, museums are no longer merely sites of preservation; they are platforms for social action, actively contributing to community cohesion and well-being.
